For the past three years, my mornings have always begun with a cup of coffee brewed in my Keurig coffee maker. However, as of late, when brewing my coffee, my Keurig has randomly turned off, and the same thing will happen after I restart it.

If you’ve found this page, you may be dealing with something similar. So, why your Keurig is shutting off while brewing, and how can you fix it? Here, I’ll discuss every potential reason for your Keurig to turn off while brewing and provide solutions so you can enjoy your coffee without interruption.

Why Your Keurig is Shutting Off While Brewing?

If the K-Cup hasn’t been properly punctured at the bottom by the needle in the K-Cup basket, the Keurig will turn off during brewing.

A clogged brew needle, defective outlet, or misplaced magnet in the water reservoir might cause it to turn off unexpectedly.

Why Does My Keurig Turn Off During Brew?

The Bottom Of The K-Cup Is Not Punctured

If your Keurig suddenly stops brewing, the K Cup is probably at fault rather than the machine itself. That’s why we recommend using high-quality and reliable K cups like the Peet’s K Cup pods or the illy K Cups to avoid such problems. If you’ve ever used a Keurig, you know that the pods get a hole punched in the top when you place them in the basket and close the lid.

But you might not know that a hole is also punched out of the base of the K cup. To prevent overflow, the Keurig will stop brewing if the pod is not punctured at the bottom to allow the water to escape.

Some milk K capsules, such as cappuccinos and lattes, are tougher than others, so if the pod is very thick or the needle at the base of the brew basket is damaged, you may not be able to make a hole in the bottom of the pod.

Remove the pod and look at the base of your Keurig suddenly turns off while brewing. Find the cause if the bottom has no hole or a hole that is only partially punctured.

You can manually puncture the K pod by pressing it firmly into the pod basket until a hole is made, or you can use pliers to straighten out the needle at the base of the pod basket.

Your Keurig Needs Descaling

Descaling, or cleaning your Keurig, is a little more time-consuming approach that may be necessary to fix the problem.

keurig descaling solution

If your Keurig keeps turning off during the brewing process, try descaling it to remove any mineral deposits or debris that may have accumulated inside.

Your Keurig Needs a Reset

There could be a technical issue with your Keurig if it keeps turning off during the brewing process. If you suspect this is the case, resetting the device’s central processing unit is your best bet.

Misaligned Magnet in the Water Tank

If your Keurig with a removable water reservoir keeps turning off during brewing, you can easily fix it by unplugging it and checking to see if the magnet on the reservoir is aligned with the magnet on the brewer.

The Keurig cannot detect any accessible water if the magnets aren’t in full or partial contact with one another.

Keurig Timer With Automatic Shutoff

If your Keurig has a timer or auto-shutoff feature, disabling it is another easy one to do. Doing this lets you finish your brew without worrying about the Keurig’s timer going off.

Interrupted Brewing

If the K pods are being correctly pierced, but the Keurig is still cutting off the brewing process, there is another possible reason why.

In my experience, the Keurig stops brewing most frequently, not immediately after I put water in it, turn it on, and start it up, but rather a few minutes later, when I’ve forgotten about it and come back to start the coffee.

The coffee maker will act as if it’s brewing, turn on the lights, and then shut off a few minutes later when I do this. If I restart the brewing process and return in an hour or two, it won’t have made any coffee.

When the brewing process is halted and resumed, I wonder if my older machine is confused. For some reason, this is quite annoying; therefore, I never let the Keurig sit or turn off before pressing the brew button when I want coffee.
